For all those present in Seoul during the 1990s including this editor, Munsoo Kwon’s 2016 Fall Winter collection was like a fashion flashback to the birth of KPOP. Who remembers Seo Taeji Boys and their classic single NAN ARAN? Who remembers jamming to H.O.T’s first hit single CANDY or so badly wanting to fit in and get in to iconic Juliana’s club here in Seoul? That’s how far Munsoo Kwon took us back with his sartorial tribute collection to the outrageous oversized fashion styles of early 1990s Korea. Tragically, we did not seethe hip hop inspired ski goggles fashion on this runway, but we were delighted by the depth of Munsoo Kwon’s witty fashion intelligence. We loved the playful use of oversized pinstripe and bomber jackets mixing with both sleekly tailored and loosely fitted high water style pants, and endeared ourselves to turtlenecks with the word “OPPA“, (a Korean term used by women to strategically flatter men’s egos), scrawled on the front in giant print to really turn back the clock. The color palette broke out from the designers strong history with monochrome and fused fuchsia pink, navy, and camel tones onto this runway. The use of students waving balloons at the end of the runway was particularly fitting with the 90’s nostalgia KPOP fandom theme, and gave a reminder to who really drives the market place trends, who cares most about their fashion, and who is supremely proud to buy the designer clothes for the first time, it is the youth!
Before scrolling down below for runway photos, for entertainment purposes, here is a link to H.O.T.’s candy. Get ready, we really weren’t kidding about the ski goggles.
